FKAB Marine Design says that ‘Saltstraum’ the third in its series of Utkilen T32 stainless steel chemical tankers, has been delivered to owner Utkilen, and ‘Sydstarum’, the fourth and final ship in the series is beginning sea trials.

The Swedish designer said that this series of ice-class vessels has been challenging, owner Utkilen of Norway having demanded advanced design with low energy consumption for environmental friendliness. The resulting ships have met the specification, with good cooperation from builder China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou) Dingheng Co.

The 10,500 dwt tankers, with duplex stainless steel cargo tanks, are focusing on low fuel consumption, reduced NOx emissions and LNG readiness to prepare for possible future upgrade to gas fuel. Shore power is installed with sufficient capacity to handle loading and unloading. High capacity loading and unloading pumps, in combination with high tank cleaning efficiency, will reduce time in ports.

As well as being LNG-ready, the ships are prepared for installation of battery packs, to be used either as UPS or for Peak shaving.
