Ship design company Knud E Hansen of Denmark says that the Nanjing Jinling Shipyard in China has launched the second in a series of up to 12 Grimaldi G5GG ro-ro vessels.

This second order, Eco Barcelona, is scheduled for delivery in August or September, following the first vessel, Eco Valencia which is shortly to be handed over.

The newbuilds were designed by Knud E Hansen in collaboration with Grimaldi's Technical and Energy Saving department and are claimed to be the most sustainable ro-ro ships of their type, being equipped with scrubbers, air lubrication systems and solar panels as well as a hybrid battery power pack, enabling then to achieve zero emissions while in port. They are 238m long, 34m beam, and of about 64,000gt. The first vessels will operate in the Mediterranean, and three of the class will be operated by Grimadi subsidiary Finnlines in the Baltic region.
