RINA AND MES COOPERATE ON DUAL-FUEL TANKER DESIGNS

Tuesday, October 26, 2021

Italian classification society RINA and Trieste-based ship designer Marine Engineering Services (MES) have signed an agreement to cooperate on chemical tankers concepts that will use alternative fuels.

MES is an established company in the design of high-tech gas and chemical tankers with new technologies. RINA brings to the project its expertise in energy transition towards compliance with IMO's decarbonisation goals.

The agreement will focus on three innovative and forward-looking ship designs, each of about 13,000dwt, with different fuelling systems:

  • CMBV (Chemical Tanker & Methanol Bunkering Vessel), a chemical tanker fuelled by methanol also able to supply bunkering of methanol fuel to other vessels;
  • 'Ammonia-Ready' LNG Dual-Fuel chemical tanker, capable of being retrofitted as an ammonia-fueled ship in the future;
  • 'LPG-Ready' LNG Dual-Fuel chemical tanker, capable of being retrofitted as an LPG-fueled ship in the future.
