Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) says that its MGO mono-fuel engine UEC-LSJ has received the Marine Engineering of the Year award (Dokou Memorial Award) from the Japan Institute of Marine Engineering.

The MGO mono-fuel engine UEC-LSJ was developed by J-ENG together with Onomichi Dockyard Co and supported by the Nippon Foundation. It has been adapted to use only MGO as fuel, in order to meet the SOx emission regulations for ships, as well as to meet other environmental regulations, such as the NOx limits and Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) regulations.

The stratified water injection technology used in the UEC-LSJ can potentially be applicable to the dual fuel combustion of liquid fuels such as biofuel, so the engine has been recognised as an advanced technology that can contribute to decarbonisation.

J-ENG says it will actively continue to research and develop alternative fuel technologies for the shipping industry as part of its sustainability goal.
