PIONEERING ELECTRIC VSP INSALLATION AT GONDAN

PIONEERING ELECTRIC VSP INSALLATION AT GONDAN

Tuesday, March 9, 2021

Gondan Shipbuilders' main facilities in Asturias, Spain, has received the first pair of electric Voith Schneider Propellers (eVSP) to be manufactured, which will be installed in a newbuild Commissioning Service Operation Vessel for Østensjø Rederi.

The electric VSP passed the factory acceptance test (FAT) recently at the Voith facilities in Germany. Gondan says it is the first yard to integrate the new electrically-powered propulsion units into a vessel.

Each eVSP is fitted with five 2.3m length blades driven by an integrated electric permanent magnet motor with an input power of 1850kW, delivering a fast and smooth response while keeping noise-emissions to minimum levels.

As well as the custom built eVPS units, the new vessel incorporates other innovative environmental features, including two independent battery banks. The design was conceived with a view towards zero carbon emission operation in the future.
