MOL LAUNCHES NOVEL LIGHTWEIGHT CRADLE FOR STEEL COILS

Wednesday, April 22, 2020

Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) says that it has, along with its subsidiary MOL Techno-Trade, jointly developed an innovative way to secure steel coils for containerised transport.

The system, to be known as the MOL Coilporter, is a cradle used to lash steel coils, an essential material for automobile manufacturing and other industries, to ensure safer containerised transport. It was developed following collaboration with Mitsui OSK Kinkai, which offers transport service for steel materials, Utoc Corporation, and MOL Logistics (Japan). These companies shared customer feedback with the development team, contributing to the paatented Coilporter design.

Differences from the conventional lashing are as follows:

  • Assembly/Loading, about 3 minutes per cradle even with inexperienced workers.
  • Maximum weight of cradle: about 3kg/part.
  • The cargo can be pushed into the container for loading, and no special equipment is required.
  • Easy to dismantle.
  • The cargo can be pulled out for unloading, and no special equipment is required.
  • High resiliency reduces risk of cargo damage.
  • Reusable and recyclable, ensuring more effective use of resources.

MOL Logistics will commence service using the MOL Coilporter as a product in May 2020 as part of its service in Japan.

The MOL Coilporter has been approved for use by Ocean Network Express (ONE) based on trial shipments.
