Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has received orders for two large, high-speed ferries from Shin Nihonkai Ferry of Japan, to be constructed at the Tategami Main Plant of MHI's Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works, and scheduled for delivery in 2021.

The two ferries on order will be 222.5m long, 25m wide, 20.4m deep, with draught of 7.4m and approximately 15,400 gt. Each vessel features capacity for about 268 passengers, 154 trucks and 30 passenger cars.

Energy efficiency will be improved by 6% compared to the current vessel, mainly due to adoption of a new optimal hull type. The ferries will be outfitted with exhaust gas cleaning systems for the four main engines and three generators, to comply with IMO SOx regulations.

The order is said to be driven by a shift in the Japanese transportation economy, from on-land to marine transport, both in order to reduce CO2 emissions and to address labour shortages in the road transport industry. With this in mind, MHI intends to extend its capabilities in building high-efficiency ferries and ro-ro vessels.
