Monday, July 27, 2020

A joint venture between Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, MAN Energy Solutions and Lloyd's Register, established in 2019 to commercialise ammonia technology for ship propulsion, has resulted in class society approval.

According to Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co, of which Hyundai Mipo is a part, LR has issued Approval in Principle (AIP) for ammonia-propelled vessels, believed to be the first such certification for a Korean company for the development of this new technology.

The aim is to commercialise the technology, with the first engines running by 2025, in advance of the IMO's 2030 and 2050 greenhouse gas reduction targets.

LR and MAN Energy Solutions are additionally involved joint development with MISC Berhad and Samsung Heavy Industries on an ammonia-fuelled tanker project.
