J-Eng, the marine engines joint venture between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kobe Diesel, has won an award in Japan for its mono-fuel UEC-LSI engine concept.

The Marine Engineering of the Year (Dokou Memorial Award) was established to promote outstanding marine engines, equipment and related technology in the field of marine engineering, and is co-sponsored by Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers, The Japan Institute of Marine Engineering, and Japan Institute of Navigation.

The award was given for J-Eng's MGO mono-fuel UEC-LSJ Engine, co-developed by J-ENG and Onomichi Dockyard with the support of The Nippon Foundation, which has been developed and designed to use only MGO (Marine Gas Oil), in order to comply not only with the IMO 2020 SOx emission regulations, but also NOx regulations and the EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) requirement. The water stratified injection system offers flexibility for operating on bio-fuel and is thus expeced to contribute towards a decarbonised society.
