Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) has announced that it is to enter into a collaboration research contract regarding Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) with NYK, MTI and ClassNK, with the aim of improving main engine safety and optimisation of maintenance timing and intervals.

The collaborative research will be based on vessel operational data and main UE engine’s performance data which will be used to investigate and optimise reliability and economy of UE-type main engines.

A UE-equipped in-service ship will have various additional sensors installed which will monitor the condition of the main engine. This, combined with existing know-how and past experience, will help to realise increased accuracy in diagnosing potential problems and thus establish an optimised maintenance programme. The results of the research will be shared and utilized with ClassNK to enable upgraded CBM-based vessel inspection and survey programmes.

Additionally, J-ENG is carrying out a study using digital twin technology which will use actual data to virtually reproduce the main engine’s running condition. This will lead to an active introduction of IoT and AI technology to aid with future innovations.
