INTERCARGO VIDEO SAYS ACCEPT IMO PROTOCOLS FOR CREW CHANGE

Monday, June 15, 2020

Bulk shipowner organisation Intercargo has issued an urgent video appeal, targeting world governments and flag states to address the problem of crew changes during the pandemic.

Chairman Dimitris Fafalios and Vice-Chairmen Jay K Pillai and Spyros Tarasis appear in the video, Crew Change, Time is Running Out, sending out an urgent message on behalf of Intercargo and Seafarers amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fafalios makes the point that over 300,000 workers are effectively trapped at sea. Most have already extended their contracts, and Fafalios calls on all authorities to resolve the terrible situation. Intercargo members and others are asked to press their governments to accept the IMO protocols.

Pillai says that such a situation would be unmanageable on shore. It could result in a halt to world trade, and there are serious implications for both crew welfare and safety at sea and in port.

"Give sea workers essential key worker status," says Tarasis.

The video can be seen here.
