Ecospeed coating from Subsea Industries of Belgium has recently been applied on the outlet of the scrubbers of three bulk carriers in Zhoushan, China.

The shipowners required a lasting, chemically resistant coating that could withstand the hazardous pollutants of the exhausts and protect the areas surrounding the outlets. At the start of 2016 the inside of the scrubbers, located within the ships' ballast tanks, had been coated with Ecospeed for the first time.

According to Subsea Industries, with the increased number of scrubber installations, there has been an increase of corrosion damage on scrubber pipes and outlets which results in water ingress in the engine room, ballast tanks and cargo holds. As Ecospeed is highly chemically resistant, it can protect the exterior outlets as well as the interiors of scrubbers to prevent corrosion damage and the resulting consequences.

There are several benefits claimed for Ecospeed:

  • The coating system is highly chemically resistant, so is suited to the nature of the process taking place inside the scrubber.
  • Ecospeed lasts the lifetime of a vessel, so no repaints will need to be scheduled during future dockings of the ship.
  • It is 100% toxin-free, with no negative effect on the water quality or the marine environment at any point of its application or use.

Ecospeed is said to fit seamlessly with the environmental idea behind scrubber systems. It is a lasting, chemically resistant coating that will withstand the hazardous pollutants and protect the scrubbers for the lifetime of the vessel.
