ELOMATIC IN JOINT VENTURE WITH JAPAN TO DESIGN AMMONIA-READY SHIP

Friday, September 10, 2021

Japan's NYK Group, with partner company MTI, and Elomatic of Finland have started the development of a concept design for an Ammonia-fuel Ready LNG-Fuelled Vessel (ARLFV), a 'next bridge' solution designed for conversion from LNG fuel to use ammonia as fuel once an ammonia supply is available.

NYK and MTI have been working on the upgrading of the NYK fleet to run on LNG fuel in order to achieve NYK's environmental targets. LNG as fuel is seen as a means of transition to future alternative fuels. NYK Group has been participating in activities such as the Project for Safe Use of Ammonia as Marine Fuel, with the aim of launching zero-emission ships that run on fuels as ammonia or hydrogen in future. The ARLFV offers a 'Next Bridge Solution' to cover the transition of the marine fuel from LNG to ammonia.

The development of the concept design is being conducted by the NYK Group and Elomatic between September 2021 and January 2022 to identify and explore challenges to the actual design and construction of the ARLFV. The results of the development will be released at the end of the project in January 2022.
