DNV GL has identified the main detainable PSC deficiencies from PSC inspections worldwide of ships with DNV GL services, and has published a list showing the 18 most common reasons for detention.

The Classification Society says that the key to successfully reducing the number of deficiencies during a PSC inspection, and to avoiding a detention, is regular maintenance on board and a more detailed focus on these top items.

The full list is included in the latest version of DNV GL’s PSC Planner, which is now included under Fleet Status, available to DNV GL clients via a new 'Port State Control' tab in the Veracity platform.

The 18 most frequent detainable deficiencies were found in the following technical categories as defined by the PSC regimes:

  • 03 - Water/weathertight condition
  • 04 - Emergency systems
  • 07 - Fire safety
  • 10 - Safety of navigation
  • 11 - Life saving appliances
  • 13 - Propulsion main engine
  • 14 - Environmental protection
