Becker Marine Systems is to supply both the batteries and the high-lift rudder system for a plug-in hybrid vessel, a workboat to be named 'Chicago' being built by the German Hitzler yard for operations in the port of Hamburg.

The Becker flap rudder with closed linkage (Heracles) is designed to combine reliability and excellent manoeuvrability for safe operations in port. The scope of supply includes a six-rack 423kWh water-cooled Becker Cobra battery pack. The Cobra battery is designed for simple 'plug and play' installation with drop-free cooling-water connectors and self-contacting plugs for the power cabling.

The DNV type approved Cobra battery system employs inherently safe lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cell technology, in line with the particular requirements of maritime operation and classification. Becker claims that Cobra is the most compact battery system on the maritime market, and is freely scalable from a few kWh to several MWh by adding as many battery racks or clusters as required. The LFP chemistry occurs as a natural mineral in its chemical composition, so compared to others, such as NMC or NCA which include the heavy-metal cobalt, Cobra provides an environmentally friendly and green battery solution.
