FKAB Marine Design has announced a new design project, an 11,700m3 bitumen tanker, ordered by McAsphalt Marine Transportation of Canada, being constructed at Wuhu Shipyard in China, and for which FKAB in Sweden and China is providing basic and detail design.

The design, for a  Bitumen and Oil Product tanker with independent cargo tanks for bitumen and asphalt. has been produced to accommodate McAsphalt's quality requirements for operation in the harsh environment of the Great lakes in Canada, with a focus on low environmental impact, long-term operation, high flexibility, and very low fuel consumption, using FKAB’s proven modern lines with F-Bow.

The propulsion system comprises two four stroke dual fuel main engines, with CP-propeller, using LNG/LBG as main fuels. It is designed with full battery and UPS power, to guard against power black outs.

FKAB claims a particular strength in the Bitumen tanker sector, with three different designs currently under contract with Chinese shipyards.
